What was originally an informal 'kick about' between a few friends from Great Britain, the United States and Australia has evolved into what is now known as the International Ukrainian Football Tournament. Over two tournaments this amateur international football competition has seen the participation of numerous teams from Ukraine, Great Britain, USA/Canada and Australia.

While traveling in 2005, an Australian-Ukrainian, Danylo Sawalaga met and forged friendships with players and organisers from Ukrainian football teams in GB and the US. He realised that Ukrainians from across the world shared his passion for football. This realisation inspired him to set up a team in his home city of Sydney, Australia and subsequently organise an International Ukrainian Football Tournament for Ukrainians worldwide.

The vision for the competition was not only to bring Ukrainians from Ukraine and diaspora together, but to unite all those with a passion for football. It would give Ukrainians from around the world to bond firstly as Ukrainians and as passionate football players and supporters to exchange ideas, learn from each other and use these ideas to further develop their respective football clubs to benefit future generations.

The inaugural International Ukrainian Football Tournament was held in Sydney in January 2007. The competition comprised of three Australian teams and overseas teams from USA/Canada, GB. IUFT 2007 was a huge success, large crowds gathered to watch the competition and the Tournament receive worldwide media coverage.

The football on show was of good standard and was played in good spirit. It was eventually the home side, Sydney Trident that won the competition. Since this innauguaral tournament there have been tournaments held in Adelaide, Australia and Nottingham, United Kingdom both adding a unique legacy to this ever growing tournament.
